11 MayBuying Gold Coins As An Investment

These days, coin collecting isn’t just about fun or hobbies anymore. Buying coins can sometimes be an investment. To make it worth the time and money, however, you might want to look into buying gold and sometimes silver coins as an investment. As you know, gold is the most expensive metal available in coins. As such, they store value very efficiently, and when gold prices go up, they also sell very quickly as gold (just the metal in general) is in demand nearly every single day of the year.

A major concern you’ll have to pay attention to is the legitimacy of the coin. As with any high priced metal, it’s absolutely required that you make sure the gold coin is actually a gold coin and not a “gold colored zinc” coin. Usually, when purchasing a gold coin, you’ll get a gold coin certificate of authenticity that is individually numbered to guarantee the legitimacy. That’s all safe and clear if you get one of those. If you don’t get one and you know you won’t, best to check it out before purchase.

Buying gold coins as an investment can also get quite risky. No matter how much you dress up the situation, this is still an investment, meaning you can gain or lose a lot or a little. It’s basically a slower progression of the stock market. When you buy those gold coins, you assume the same risk any other investor does, so be sure not to put so much emphasis into these coins that you will ruin your bank if things don’t turn out well.

The last thing you have to decide is exactly which coins you’ll want. Each coin, whether it be a Gold American Buffalo or Gold South African Krugerrand, ends up hanging around the $1000 mark, never more than $100 over or under. The price charts for the last year are pretty much the same across the board, so most people don’t take any notice between the different types of coins. It’s really not about the types or names of the coins, they are just for show while you have them. The prices are there for the gold, which is probably why the price charts are so similar.

In the end, investing in a few gold coins is risky, but what else would you expect? It’s basically investing in a stock that looks different. Head for the largest dealers you can. They are least likely to throw a scam your way. Once you do get your hands on some coins, you just have to wait and ride out the ups and downs of the market until you feel that the price is right and the time is to sell the coins.

Military badges are a device or emblem worn as an indication of rank or office in the military. It is an award of honour and has become a collector’s item. They are a reminder of a nation’s history and culture and are often valuable collector’s items as many of these items are limited editions.

Military badges vary according to the collector’s interests and are usually collected according to a specific theme such as medals from the pre-boer war, medals from World War Two or even medals dating back as far as World War One. To the ordinary person, badges may seem expensive, but these valuable items each carry a historical story with them and are a remembrance of how things came to be what they are today. They are an indication of past struggles and also achievements and many collectors treasure them as family heirlooms past down from generation to generation.

Other collector’s items in this line include knobkerries and African weapons. These weapons include the South African police spear which was issued to native constables in the 1920s. Zulu hunting spears are also common collector’s items as well as the Zulu Inquwa which was a stabbing spear. 08 MayN Scale Model Trains – It’s Their Size That’s So Engaging!

N gauge trains are the smallest of the three most popular sizes and by some accounts, second only in popularity to HO gauge. N gauge trains are built to a scale of 1:160, that is, one one hundred and sixtieth the size of the real locomotive or coach being depicted. The trains run on diminutive tracks that are spaced nine millimeters apart, hence the name N – for nine. If O gauge is the granddaddy of model railroading, N is the new kid on the block. Bachmann, the world’s biggest manufacturer of model train equipment has an extensive range of American N gauge locomotives and rolling stock.

Cute – but what’s the real appeal for the serious modeler?

N gauge trains are half the size of their HO brothers, so whatever you can do in HO in a given space, you can achieve double that with N. This obviously has appeal for the serious hobbyist who has only limited space to give to the railroad empire. It’s no coincidence that Japan, with its small apartments and restricted living spaces is also one of the major producers of N gauge equipment for the domestic and export markets.

But there’s another, more subtle advantage to choosing N. Somehow, the relationship of the trains to the miniature worlds they run in looks particularly “right” in N gauge. You can model the mountains bigger, the canyons and gulches deeper, the forests denser. And finally, a mainline express loco, with nine to ten coaches behind, all too often just looks wrong in HO, unless you are lucky enough to have yards of relatively straight mainline track in your basement. With an N gauge train, you can get away with it on a much more modest sized length of trackbed.

But so much detail is lost when you shrink it that much.

Yes, and O gauge modelers say exactly the same thing about HO; live-steamers the same about O gauge. The real issue is to look at how much detail the manufacturers are managing to incorporate.

Bachmann’s EMD DD40AX (with Digital Command Control) or if steam is your thing, Bachmann’s big 4-8-4s, available for a number of different roads, are pretty much the state of the miniature injection-molding art. Do you want to really spoil yourself? Just take a look at the articulated C & O 2-6-6-2 in Bachmann’s Spectrum range. And of course, if money’s not an object, finally, the brass loco makers have turned their attention to the burgeoning N gauge train market. N gauge brass is still rarer than HO, but that’s changing.

Smaller… and cheaper?

Well, no. Cost is about the same as HO. That being said, there are some wonderfully inexpensive N gauge train sets out there. Bachmann has plenty of starter sets as well as individual locomotives and rolling stock that won’t blow the household budget. The very nice Thunder Valley set, headed by the classic EMD GP40, with two cars, track and powerpack, all there in the box, is just $105.00. A personal favorite of mine is the Yard Boss: two cars, caboose, track, powerpack and saving the best until last, Bachmann’s tough little 0-6-0 Yard Switcher and tender. Yes, I’m a die-hard steam fan and it’s that little slope-back tender that gets my pulse racing

07 MayThe Details about the Collection of the Pens

Pen has been out of the date in the computer era. However, the collection of pens has generated a new trend. Due to its long history, pens are regarded as the symbol of memory and culture. More and more people start to pay attention to the pens’ cultural value and show interest in the collection of them.

Take Parker pens as an example, as the world’s second oldest pen manufacturing company, its history has been over a hundred years. They contain the essence of modern and contemporary culture, which makes Parker pens extraordinarily solemn. It’s not only a writing instrument but also an inheritor witness the past hundred years.

The brand pen and golden pen have high return. For pen collection lovers, it’s better to select the brand pens and the golden pens based on the investment objective. If he only has interest in pens, he would follow his interest and ignore the brands and materials. The collection value and the investment value of the fountain pen are closely related to circulation quantity, survive quantity and the production standard. At present, lots of consumers buying the Park pen as an antique.

We appreciate the pens in four parts: the cap, the penholder, the nib and the pen pouch.

We need see clearly that whether there is damage or cracking on the cap, if the texture is matched with the pen of the line, whether distorted and so on. The appearance of the penholder should be beautiful and its hardy feeling should be comfortable. It’s necessary for pens’ collection.

To the point of the pen, firstly, you should see its water releasing level and mellow and full level; secondly, the attrition grade of the point and its gold content is also important. The higher the gold content in it and the less the attrition of it, the higher the collection value of it. Finally, examine whether the pen’s cap, penholder, nib are originals. The value of originals is the most.

In addition, we must pay attention to its famous celerity and limited edition. The value of pen used by celebrity will be increased by his/her popularity. The value of limited edition lies on its special historical meaning, as well as its limited exiting amount. For example, the Parker Company produced five hundred standard series of black Parker pens with crown sign, unique number for each series; it was full of historical value besides the limited circulation.

06 MayWomen of DC Busts – Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn review

Today, I’ll be doing a review of the Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn Women of DC busts. I was sold on one of these the moment I saw the pics, and once I saw a good deal, I snapped them up.

If you want to see images, please click the above link.

I’ll start with the Harley, since she’s the one I initially wanted more. Aside from the animated pieces, I haven’t found a Harley Quinn I’ve liked until this one. The base is fantastic, but that’s almost expected with this line. One thing that stood out to me about this statue is the texturing involved. The giant hammer she’s holding looks great, the wooden texture comes off exactly as it should. The little puff balls at the end of her hat are just as nice as the hammer, great attention to detail on this sculpt.

The pose is really classy and cute. The expression on her face and her pose are quality. She looks like a real person would look, dressed up as Harley. You could say she doesn’t look quite so out there as she usually did in the animated series, but I happen to like this look. The sculpt on the whole thing is just fantastic.

Now this was a bit of a surprise. I can see why she goes for the absurd amounts that she does on Ebay, this is by far the best Poison Ivy statue/maquette/anything released to date. I’ll start off with saying the base is nice and well done, but it’s not a knock-out like some of the others.

I’ll go through the minor flaws with this one first. In terms of paint, it’s slightly sloppier than most of the line. It’s all minor details, but you should be able to make it out in the pictures. Some of the edges are weak, and the eye shadow is done a little poorly. Harley, for example, has a nice transparent blue. Ivy’s isn’t really transparent, it’s a little too dark and splotchy. It doesn’t look bad though, considering how the hair works with her face. There’s also some paint marks on her arm, but I haven’t seen that on any others, so I won’t subtract from her score on that front.

Now, on to the good stuff. The sculpt is superb. Even though it’s a simple pose, with her arms crossed (obviously to get those giant breasts pushed up to the point of bursting out of her leafy clothes), everything about it is done well. The leaf covering, the hair, the face, and the rest is great. The white skin colour, the hair and paint on the face are all quite nicely done, as well as the shading on the leaves. They nailed her expression.

Overall, I’m going to give these both a 5/5. They’re two of the best in the series, and two popular characters that really haven’t had really fantastic releases until now.

04 MayThe quest to find that pot of gold

Vaseline glassware will glow bright green under the black light because of uranium oxide in the glass, Cut glass will glow yellow; reproductions have no reaction or show a blue-white. Pattern glass made before 1925-30 fluoresce yellow; reproductions generally do not have any fluorescence.

Fabrics, WWII patches, uniforms and quilts: Most threads made before 1945-50 are natural fibers such as cotton, silk, etc which generally do not fluoresce. Synthetic fibers- rayon, polyester, etc. made since WW2 all fluoresce. This allows you to detect new military uniforms, new quilts, new doll clothes, etc. Even if old fabric is used to repair an old quilt, the new thread will fluoresce. The black light helps in detecting reproduced military uniforms, patches and etc. Now I would like to tell you direct; I know nothing about German patches, decals or uniforms. I’ve been told that these black lights help check to see if German Military patches and uniforms are real or repaired in anyway. I do know they work on American military patches and uniforms.

You found that old metal toy that looks almost new. Did you know that modern paint will fluoresce or glow under a black light, older paints will not, you can use this to determine whether a painted object is an antique or a newer reproduction in addition to determine whether each has been “touched up” and if so, how extensive was the repair.

Perhaps your son, daughter, grandsons, granddaughters, or you are into rock and mineral collecting. Whether your collection contains rare rocks or minerals, you have collected while traveling the world or items you simply find pleasing in color and shape, using black light can enhance your collection’s display. Rocks and minerals adsorb the UV light and re-emit light of different color (red, white, green or blue). This is called Fluorescence and many rocks and minerals exhibit these attribute. An example of a long wave specimen is wernerite it’s a bright golden yellow color under long wave.

Black lights are also used in finding those pet odors problem in your home, they are probably hidden in places you cannot see. These lights can find automotive air conditioners, coolant leaks. Do you leave in an area where scorpions are a problem? Under a black light, the scorpion is a bright green. It is interesting to note that a deep red light, which is on the other side of the visible range from ultraviolet is employed when catching night crawlers at night.

They are also used in crime scenes to uncover body fluid*, finding counterfeit money, ID and document verification, Club hand stamp screening. There are probably a few 100 more uses for a black light.

Many collectors use these lights on Vaseline glassware, Cut glass, Pattern glass, fabrics, WW II Patches and even Cast Iron.
