30 JanHow Different Cuban Cigars Get Their Flavor

The manufacturers of Cuban cigars carefully consider every component of each stick to bring out a distinct kind of flavor. There are several key elements that significantly contribute to how a cigar tastes.

Size is one of those elements. The larger the radius, the more a manufacturer can stuff different kinds of tobacco into the roll-up. That means a thicker cigar could have a stronger and more complex flavor. With a long stick, flavor intensifies as the cigar is consumed. Basically, large tobacco rolls are more likely to contain more complex recipes.

The age of tobacco and how long it was fermented will also influence flavor. Older leaves become stronger and richer in character. As the leaves are cured longer, the more that impurities are lessened. Tobacco of this grade is the premium kind because of its full and refined taste.

Just like wine, even after tobacco has been rolled up and packaged for sale, it will continue to age while stored. The concoction of tobacco within the wrap will blend more into flavor over time. Aged cigars become even fuller and more refined.

Tobacco grows in several regions in Cuba – Vuelta Abajo, Semi Vuelta, Partido and Vuelta Arriba. The differing soil composition of each region affects the leaves’ essence. How the flavors differ satisfies the varying preferences of customers.

The methods in preparing cigars also determine their quality. Hand-rolled cigars bring better construction and will taste better than machine-made products.

Generally, the quality and taste of Cuban cigars depends on how a manufacturer integrates all these elements.

29 JanGold Maltese piece from a golden era of coin design sells for $340,000

Earlier this week, Numismatica Ars Classica held two sales of fine and rare coins with some exciting results.

The first of these was the sale of the Restelli collection, subtitled Coins and Medals from the Knights of St. John (Rhodes and Malta). This was a truly spectacular collection by any standards and bidders pulled the stops out to get their hands on the 480 lots.

There was one standout lot however: A 12 Zecchini gold piece dated to 1725.

The obverse of this coin shows the cuirassed bust of the Grand Master (Antonio Manuel de Vilhena 1722-1736) facing right, inside a broken circle, wearing large perruque, whilst the reverse shows, within a broken circle, a crowned and framed oval shield with arms of the Grand Master quartered with those of the Order.

This is not only the most expensive coin in the Restelli collection, it is also the most spectacular. This coin has never before been offered for sale at an auction.

It was under the rule of Vilhena that Malta undertook to reform its coinage. The result is a multitude of splendid portrait coins, in both gold and silver. The 12 Zecchini might have been the one presented to the Grand Master himself, who appears to have shown a great personal interest in the production of coins.

Restelli-Sammut states that “the Grand Mastership of Vilhena marks an era in which the art of mintage in Malta reached an artistic level of high merit” The Restelli collection contains the most complete selection of Vilhena coins, ever assembled.

Unique and of utmost importance, this is the largest gold coin ever to be struck in Malta. It has a lovely reddish colour and is in extremely fine condition, which was simply too much for collectors and investors to pass up. The piece doubled its 150,000 Swiss Franc estimate to achieve 340,000 Swiss Francs (roughly $340,000).

29 JanThe SS Montrose

In 1910 the wife murderer Dr. Albert Crippen evaded arrest 3y the English police by boarding the SS Montrose bound for Canada, traveling under a false name and with his mistress disguised as a boy. The murder inquiry and subsequent search for Dr. Crippen, after the police dug up the dismembered remains of Mrs. Crippen in the couple’s London home, received widespread publicity. While at sea headed for Canada, the skipper of the Montrose recognized his infamous passenger and radioed this information back to London.

Scotland Yard sent a detective on a faster ship to arrest Dr. Crippen on his arrival in North America. The details of the gory murder, compounded with lust and adultery, dramatic circumstances of Crippen’s arrest, and his subsequent trial and execution whetted public interest in radio-telegraphy. This interest was intensified with the occurrence of a major maritime tragedy a short time later.
In April 1912, the “unsinkable” RMS Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. On Sunday night, 14 April the ship struck an iceberg and sank with the loss of 1,517 lives constituting the greatest peacetime maritime disaster in history.

Ironically, the SS Californian was close by, but because the radio operator had gone off duty after working sixteen continuous hours, the ship did not pick up the Titanic’s radioed distress signals. Had the Californian had a radio operator “on watch” most of the lives lost would have been saved. Prior to that tragedy, wireless telegraphy was being adopted only cautiously by society in general and maritime interests in particular. Because of the publicity surrounding the Titanic’s maiden voyage and social prestige of some of the passengers drowned, political and social pressures forced the shipping industry to install wireless telegraphy and require a twenty-four-hour radio watch on all ocean-going vessels.

From then on, despite further setbacks (including the “Marconi scandal” of 1912-13, surrounding the terms of a proposed British government contract to be awarded to the company), the company’s fortunes steadily prospered. World War I witnessed the widespread adoption of radio communication in many applications and, shortly after that war the birth of the radio broadcast industry. The Marconi companies played important roles in most of these developments and grew to a leading and respected presence in the radio and later, the electronics industries.

28 JanHow To Choose Hermit Crab Shells

You may not be aware of this but hermit crabs are not really classed as true crabs because they do not have their own shell and they have to source a discarded shell to move into. Once you become the proud owner of one or more of these little critters, not only will you be responsible for settling them into their new habitat, or crabitat as it is commonly known, but you will also need to become the provider of hermit crab shells for your new family members.

The little crabby critters need to be provided with a good variety of shells so that they can move into a new shell as and when they want. They can be quite picky when choosing a new shell, and in the wild it is not unusual to see a couple of crabs fighting over one particular shell. They will even fight to the death so you can see how important sourcing suitable crabby shells for your little companions can be.

Some species of the little crawlers like to change shells more often than others, but it is a good idea to have a variety of similar shells in different sizes for each individual critter that you own. The purpose of the shells for your little crabby pet is to protect the soft abdomen, which houses both the digestive glands and the reproductive organs, and also to keep predators at bay. It is important for the little guy to have a snug fitting shell as this helps retain the moisture which is vital to his well being. Too small a shell will render it difficult for the little guy to retreat into and too large a shell will make it almost impossible for the crab to hang onto.

Shells come in all shapes and sizes and with different shaped openings such as oval or round, and some even have more of a thin open slit. Until you get to know which sort your crab prefers, it’s probably better to provide a variety. Different species of these little crabby crawlers tend to pick out specific shapes. When choosing your crabby pet’s shells it is imperative to make sure that they are clean, both inside and out, and that there are no cracks or porous openings. Always boil the empty shells in a pan on the stove and leave to cool before presenting them to your pet.

The hardest part of providing your pets with shells can be finding them in the first instance. Some shops sell painted shells but I would be a little wary of choosing these because the paint could be harmful to the crabs. You may find your pet store stocks a few but the choice is likely to be limited. Alternatively you may be fortunate to find some on your local beach, but if all else fails, then I would recommend buying from a specialist online store. The good thing about buying your pet’s shells from a specialist online store is that their shells are usually numbered in size, so once you know what size your crab is wearing, you can easily order the next size up when he is ready for a new shell. Another bonus is that most stores will accept the return of an unused shell in exchange for a different size.

So you can see choosing hermit crab shells and getting the right fit, is almost as tricky as choosing a new pair of pants! However, now with all your new knowledge, picking out the right one for you and your little crawling companion should be that much easier.

22 JanLionel Polar Expresses – How Come They Make O and G Gauges?

Lionel Trains were quick to catch the buzz created by the release of the animated Robert Zemeckis movie in 2004 with the release of their own O gauge electric Polar Express Train set. Shortly after, they released a cheaper G gauge version of the train. The two versions of the same product have caused some confusion, especially amongst parents who are not especially train-savvy. So what’s the difference?

The O gauge set is an electric train set, with the locomotive made from die-cast metal parts, running on standard Lionel track, also made of metal. The G gauge set, on the other hand, is made from plastic – locomotive, coaches and track. The locomotive is battery-powered and these two factors, more than anything else account for the price difference.

I want to give my kids a great Christmas – which should I buy?

Both sets represent significant entry points to a highly satisfying, life-long hobby. Both sets will give your kids a Christmas to remember and provide a focal point for you to interact with your children’s play. For my two cents worth, train sets are worth every dollar you spend and they’ll continue bringing fun and joy well beyond the holiday season.

The G Gauge set, selling for around $100.00, is more suitable for younger children; 3 to 6 year olds. Everything you need on December 25th is right there in the box – batteries (6 C size for the loco and 2 AAs for the RC controller) are included. You can also purchase separately a 9.6v rechargeable to take the place of the Cs. The locomotive makes surprisingly good steam train sounds, including bell and whistle, the coach has opening doors and the observation car features a disappearing hobo, who is sure to be a hit with the kids! The easily assembled track makes up into a 72″ by 55″ oval. Add-on track packs are available from Lionel stockists, making this train set a genuine model railroad entry-point. All up, a great introduction to a great hobby.

OK, I’m convinced… but tell me about the O gauge train set.

Lionel’s O gauge Polar Express costs quite a bit more (anywhere from $266.00 to $329.00, depending on where you buy) but you get a whole lot more. This is a genuine electric train set which will run with any of the other O gauge products in the Lionel range. Suitable for what ages? Well, you know your own children, but 7 or so seems about right to me.

The locomotive – a pretty decent representation of the Lima-built Berkshire 2-8-4 – puffs smoke as it runs, chugs like a real steam loco and has a very realistic-sounding steam whistle. The three passenger cars have interior lighting (a nice touch for when darkness falls on December 25th, and the living-room lights go out) and the passengers themselves are silhouetted in the windows of the cars. The track assembles easily into a 60″ x 40″ oval. The control pack (which also has the bell and whistle buttons) is big and solid and the throttle itself is satisfyingly chunky and mounted on the right hand side of the pack.

So there y’ go. Different horses for different courses, from a great American model train maker. G or O? Have fun deciding. Why not slip into your local train store and try them yourself. Great oaks from small acorns grow.

21 JanWhat Are The Main Species Of Hermit Crab?

Are you lost on the subject of what your little pet crustacean actually is? There are so many types and version of the animal out there that it can get a bit daunting trying to find your particular pet’s identity. But never fear! With this article, you will soon be naming what your little friend is without any problems.

There are two main species of hermit crab that are widely available in the USA and these are Coenobita Clypeatus which is native to the Caribbean and Coenobita Compressus who hails from Ecuador. They are more commonly referred to as the purple pincher (PP for short) and the E-crab who is more affectionately referred to amongst crabbers as “Eccie”. If you own one of these adorable little critters, chances are that he is one of the above species although some pet stores import more exotic breeds from the Pacific Rim.

Okay, so how can you determine which type of the little critter is sitting in your tank? Well, there are several key differences but one of the most obvious is that PP has a large purple claw. This claw, incidentally, is used by him to block the entrance to his shell. He also has many small markings on his legs and claws which are the equivalent of hair follicles and are called setae. These tiny filaments are made of chitin, which also constitute the makeup of the crabby critter’s exoskeleton. However, these filaments do not continue to grow, like human hair follicles, but are shed whenever the crabby critter molts. PP has far more setae on his body than does Eccie who just has a bit of “bum fluff” on his claws!

Now, take another close look at your crabby companion. If your crabby companion has quite prominent round eyes then you have the species of the little critters known as PP, whereas if his eyes are elongated and he has stripes running to the side of his head, then you are the proud owner of an Eccie. Another big difference in their appearance is that Eccie has a wider, flatter thorax and his legs tend to be the same color as his body.

As mentioned earlier, Eccie does not have a special claw with which to guard her home like PP, instead she crosses her two left sided walking legs over her large claw. Eccie is a very colorful species of the little guys and can be found in a variety of colors ranging from bright yellow, dark grey to orange and tan. It is quite frequently found as a dark tan color with bluish overtones to its body and inside of its legs. Quite often the tips of the legs are a darker color. Eccie is, however, a master of disguise, and can start off life as a tan color, only to emerge a couple of months later as a light lavender color. This is commonly a direct result of diet and is a result of a carotene deficit which can occur after molting. You can take steps to ensure this doesn’t happen to your crab by feeding him plenty of carrot and corn which are great sources of the organic compound which is carotene.

Well, I guess you now know which species of hermit crab is sitting in your tank, so go ahead and make his acquaintance and have some fun!
