On May 19, Bill Gross is selling a selection of classic rare European stamps, including a French tête-beche pair and a German/Chinese cover at Spink Shreves in New York.

However, Spink in London is also offering quite an impressive selection of philatelic pieces the same day as its sister company. Specifically: The “Alvarado” Collection of NSW, the Perkins Bacon & Co., Plates in Association with Millennium Philatelic Auctions.

The auction includes several uses of the imperforate 5d dull green and others sent from Australia to England including an 1863 (21 October) envelope from Sydney to London, bearing a 5d dull green horizontal pair.

It is a superb cover, illustrating the new 10d rate via Marseilles, and bearing one of only four or five known pairs of the dull green, and the only recorded pair on a cover. Previously part of the collections of C L Pack and V P Manwood, it is estimated at £12,000-15,000.

The expected top lot, however, is a complete sheet of proofs printed from a Two Penny Blue plate. The sheet has been hole punched at several points (positions 11, 12, 24, 36, 73, 97, 104 and 105), puncturing ‘stamps’ to indicate where the plate needed repairs.

In fact, that message is handwritten on the back of the paper, signed Thomas Richards and dated 13 Sep 1860, confirmed with a Treasury handstamp.

Despite some creasing, the lot is extremely desirable. It has been part of the collections of Dr H Osborne and John S White. In fact the piece is mentioned in the Robson Lowe Encyclopaedia (pp37-39, vol 4).

Collectors of rare stamps wishing to own a classic British rarity may be interested to know that a Tyrian Plum is currently on the market.

The newly formed South Carolina Historic Aviation Foundation will pay $15,000 to Celebrate Freedom Foundation for the partially restored B-25C Mitchell plane that ditched in the lake during a 1944 training exercise. Finally, the rare airplane has found a buyer!

The B-25 has spent more than 20 years in warehouses and hangars since being pulled from Lake Greenwood in western South Carolina in the 1980s. It was flying low on a combat training mission over the lake on June 6, 1944, D-Day in Europe, when one of its propellers hit the water. Daniel Rossman, who eventually reached the rank of lieutenant colonel but was a student pilot at the time, went down with it.

Five men on the plane swam to safety. Two were injured, including Rossman. He said his chin was cut and required 24 stitches, although he was more concerned about how much grief he and the others on board might get over the plane’s loss.

Rossman said he went on to fly combat in the Pacific during the rest of the war. “I liked the B-25 very much,” he said. “It was easy to fly. It was an airplane that had a reputation for bringing crews back. It would take a tremendous amount of damage.”

C. Cantzon Foster II, a Columbia lawyer and president of the S.C. Historic Aviation Foundation, said that the plane is believed to be one of only three B-25C bombers still in existence. That is why such model airplanes are priced as much.

“These aircraft are symbolic of the people who pioneered aviation and the people who fought in World War II. It’s a symbol of their valor. It represents so much more than the plane itself,” Foster of the S.C. Historic Aviation Foundation said.

Foster also said that the group plans to restore the 1929 Curtis-Wright hangar in Columbia, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, further restore the airplane and build a museum of South Carolina’s aviation history.

Since the release of the first Forever Stamp, featuring the Liberty Bell, issued April, 2007, more than 28 billion Forever Stamps have been sold, resulting in approximately $12.1 billion in total revenue.

Since that time, it seems the vast majority of stamps produced and sold by the United States Postal Service are Forever Stamps, and that just seems to make sense…that’s a change that benefits us, the consumer and customers of the USPS, and I appreciate the move.

And now that it appears that most of the stamps to be released for use and collection in the future will be Forever Stamps, so people don’t have to worry as much about what stamp design they want to buy and whether or not, when stamp prices rise in the future (which they always do), they will have to buy additional, small denomination, postage. That’s quite a hassle, but it seems the problem has been greatly reduced if not almost eliminated altogether.

Hermit crabs are, in general, very clean creatures and they don’t relish the thought of living in a dirty and untidy home, any more than you or I would. They do not need a lot of looking after but regular maintenance of their environment is very important for their well being. Stage 1)

The first and obvious thing that you need to do, when learning how to clean your little crawly companion’s home, is to remove the little fellas and put them into a storage box. When choosing a storage box you need to take a few points into consideration. Firstly it needs to be high sided and secondly, the sides need to be smooth. The reason for this is that your loveable little critters are excellent climbers and the last thing you want is to look into the box only to find that they have escaped. The best sort of box to use is a deep plastic Tupperware box.

Stage 2)

Once your little crabby companions are safely secured in their temporary home you can get down to the real nitty gritty of cleaning your crawling pet’s habitat. First of all take out all the paraphernalia in the glass tank, such as toys, food and water bowls, spare shells, as well as other things that they use to explore and climb. Give everything a wash,rinse in warm water and dry with a clean cloth. Do not use soapy water as this may be harmful to the little crabby guys.

Stage 3)

This solution acts as a sanitizing agent and will kill all germs that are lurking on the inside of the tank. When you have finished spraying, wipe it with a clean cloth and then rinse with warm water. Again it is important not to use any soap! Dry again. Repeat this process on the outside of the aquarium. Once this is complete, add fresh substrate, put back all the paraphernalia, and finally place the little guys back into their nice clean home. There you have it. Here are a few guidelines for performing cleaning and routine maintenance of your model trains. Regardless of whether you have a Lionel set or any other brand, performing maintenance helps avoid trouble later on.

For Lionel set locomotives, maintenance checks can be performed by removing the cover to see the inside. To remove the cover on steam engines, you must first remove the screw located underneath the smokestack. When applying the oil, keep a close watch to prevent over-oiling since excess oil has the tendency to drip out and can disrupt the electrical conductivity if it drips on your rails. Thin oil is recommended, such as 3-in-1.

Another part of the locomotive that requires cleaning is the commutator and the brushes. If these parts are not cleaned, dirt and dust can build up preventing the motor from picking up electrical power. Eventually, the locomotive will fail to operate. However, this cleaning is only needed about once a year with normal use. A technique for cleaning the commutators is to have the locomotive run slowly without the body. Then apply Rail-Zip cleaner to a rag and use that to clean the commutator as it spins. The brushes also need cleaning. These can be cleaned by spraying them with television tuner cleaner, which can be purchased from electronics stores. Allow the cleaning solution to drip of and wipe the area dry. After cleaning you are ready to put the body back on.

The wheels of freight cars also require routine maintenance. Even with shining rails and running locomotives, every Lionel set still needs clean wheels to run smoothly. An easy way to get the wheels cleaned is by mounting a straight section of track onto an 18-inch, 2×4 board. Then put a paper towel or rag and place it over the heads of the rails and drip rubbing alcohol onto the rag. Next, trickle a few drops of Goo-Gone onto rails before running the cars on the rails a few times. Continue running the locomotive back and forth over the rails until the wheel look clean and shiny.
